Good morning!

Greetings in the name of the Father, the son, and the Holy Spirit.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)

In the barren wilderness, the sun beat down mercilessly on the weary Israelites as they journeyed toward the Promised Land. Their journey had already been fraught with challenges, and now they faced a new, unexpected threat: the fierce Amalekites. These desert-dwelling warriors, known for their ruthlessness and brutality, had launched a sudden and terrifying attack on the Israelites, who were tired, thirsty, and ill-prepared for battle. Panic began to spread throughout the camp as the people realized the gravity of their situation. They were vulnerable and exposed, their very lives hanging in the balance.

Yes, the Amalekites were a particularly ferocious and brutal adversary, known for their ruthlessness in battle. Consequently, their surprise attack on the Israelites must have been incredibly frightening and disorienting for the people. In the face of such adversity, however, Moses demonstrated remarkable resilience and composure, refusing to succumb to fear or despair. Instead, he sought divine guidance and direction from God, trusting that the Lord would provide a way out of the crisis, as expressed in

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Moses, entrusted with the divine plan to confront the Amalekites, rallied the Israelites and prepared them for the battle that lay ahead. As they faced their fierce enemies, Moses, accompanied by Aaron and Hur, ascended a nearby hilltop, determined to intercede in prayer for the Israelite warriors.

The Moses On the hilltop overlooking the fierce battle between the Israelites and the Amalekites, Moses stood with his staff firmly in his grasp. His hands, though calloused from years of shepherding and leading his people, began to tremble with fatigue as he held them high, praying fervently for God’s intervention and the victory of the Israelites.

Moses’ face was etched with lines of concern and exhaustion, his eyes tightly shut as he focused on his connection with the Lord. His lips moved in silent prayer, beseeching God to protect his people and grant them the strength to overcome their ruthless enemies. The weight of the staff seemed to grow heavier with each passing moment, and Moses’ shoulders sagged under the burden of both the physical strain and the immense responsibility he felt for the welfare of the Israelites.

Aaron and Hur, observing their leader’s plight, quickly recognized the urgency of the situation. They knew that Moses’ prayers were crucial to the success of the Israelites in the battle below, and they understood that they must act swiftly to support him. As the sun blazed overhead, casting the hilltop in a harsh, unforgiving light, Aaron and Hur moved to either side of Moses.

With steadfast determination, Aaron took hold of Moses’ right arm, his own hand gripping the staff just below Moses’. Hur mirrored the action on the left, his hand providing additional support to Moses’ trembling grip. Together, they held up Moses’ weary arms, ensuring that his hands remained raised in fervent prayer to God.

As Moses continued to pray, the support of Aaron and Hur enabled him to persevere in his intercession for the Israelites. His prayers flowed uninterrupted, and the divine favor they invoked played a vital role in the battle unfolding below. The Israelites, filled with renewed strength and determination, pushed back against the advancing Amalekite forces, the tide of battle turning in their favor once more.

From the hilltop, Moses, Aaron, and Hur stood united, their combined efforts ensuring that the prayers of intercession continued to flow from Moses’ lips. As they stood in solidarity, they bore witness to the incredible power of God, working through their faith and obedience to deliver the Israelites from the clutches of their enemies.

Moses’ unwavering obedience ultimately led the Israelites to a hard-won victory over their enemies. As long as Moses’ hands remained lifted, the Israelites experienced success in the battle against the Amalekites. However, when his arms grew weary from the effort and began to sag, the Amalekites started to gain the upper hand in the conflict. Recognizing this critical situation, Aaron and Hur stepped in to assist Moses, holding up his arms as he continued to pray and intercede on behalf of the Israelites.

It shows the importance of prayer with holding up high to God in faith. With their unwavering support, Moses was able to maintain his prayers, and together with the Israelites ultimately emerged victorious, defeating the Amalekites.

This account of Moses’ steadfast obedience to God serves as a potent and powerful reminder of the importance of trusting and obeying God in every circumstance of life, no matter how challenging or daunting they may seem. As Paul wrote in

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”  (Philippians 4:13)

During times of tribulation and hardship, it is all too easy to become disheartened, overwhelmed, and lose faith. Yet, as exemplified by Moses, when we place our trust in God and wholeheartedly adhere to His commands, He will guide us through every challenge, granting us the strength, wisdom, and perseverance needed to prevail.

Furthermore, Moses’ exceptional leadership offers inspiration and guidance for us all. He was a man of immense faith, courage, and humility, who guided the Israelites through numerous trials, tribulations, and seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

“Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth.” (Numbers 12:3)

Despite the numerous challenges he faced, Moses remained resolute in his dedication to God and his people, never wavering in his commitment to serve and lead them according to God’s will. As Christians, we can draw from Moses’ extraordinary example and endeavor to be devoted servants of God, leading and influencing others, especially non-believers, with wisdom, empathy, and a heart that seeks to honor God in all things.

This passage also emphasizes the significance of having robust support in place, particularly during times of difficulty and adversity. Aaron and Hur were present to aid Moses during his time of need, propping up his arms as he fervently prayed and interceded on behalf of the Israelites. Similarly, we must be intentional in surrounding ourselves with fellow believers who can uplift, support, and encourage us in our journey with Christ, as described in

“Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”  (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)

It is impossible to confront life’s challenges in isolation; we require the support, wisdom, and encouragement of others to help us persevere and overcome the trials that we face.

One practical lesson for us is to actively participate in a local church or small group where we can find and offer support, encouragement, and accountability. Galatians 6:2 exhorts us to “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” As believers, we should not only seek for ourselves but also be willing to offer our support in Him to others, creating a strong and spiritually interconnected community in faith, which uplifts and strengthens one another.

We also want to highlight the importance of acknowledging and commemorating God’s works in our lives, as well as the lives of others around us. Moses constructed an altar and named it “The Lord is my Banner” as a testament to God’s unwavering faithfulness, provision, and protection throughout their struggle against the Amalekites. This act of remembrance served to remind the Israelites of the Lord’s unceasing presence and care for them, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Then we should remember we dedicate time and effort to remember and express gratitude for all that God has done for us, both individually and collectively as well. Why? God, after all, gave the best. Indeed, God has never given us even the second best. He always gives us the absolute best.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Indeed, we have countless reasons to be grateful: our salvation through Jesus Christ, the love and grace that God continually extends to us, the fellowship of believers that strengthens and encourages us, and the countless blessings we experience in our lives.

In conclusion, let us draw near to God under all circumstances like Moses by trusting in God’s guidance, praying to God, standing firm on faith in courage, faithfulness, and humility, supporting and encouraging one another, and continually remembering the great works of our Lord in our lives. As we strive to live out these in our daily lives, we will suddenly find God is with us every step of the way, guiding, strengthening, and sustaining us as we navigate the challenges and joys of life.

Are we facing various trials and uncertainties in our lives? Let us be mindful of the importance of prayer, just as Moses prayed fervently during the battle against the Amalekites. Jesus himself taught us the significance of prayer, as seen in

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8)

By committing ourselves to prayers, we are getting closer to God by seeking His guidance and strength in prayer.  God surely answers our prayers.

Finally, let us always remember the ultimate source of our hope and strength: our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

“fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  (Hebrews 12:2)

By keeping our focus on Jesus and relying on His strength, we can persevere through any challenge and grow in our faith.

Let’s summarize. Exodus 17:8-16 provides an in-depth account of the sudden and unexpected assault of the Amalekites against the Israelites as they journeyed through the wilderness. This was a time of immense stress, vulnerability, and peril for the Israelites, who found themselves facing a formidable enemy. Yet, despite the seemingly insurmountable odds, God had already devised a plan to safeguard His people and ensure their deliverance from this imminent danger. And Moses faithfully prayed to God as lifting up his hands high in the support of Aaron and Hur.

Yes, when we confront such a formidable enemy suddenly, let us take heart from this passage and strive to be like Moses, trusting in God’s guidance, leading with courage and faithfulness, supporting and encouraging one another, and always remembering the great works of our Lord in our lives. May God bless you all as you seek to live out these in your daily lives, and may His presence be with you always so that you will surely experience His presence under all circumstances. Amen.
